Sterilize Microorganisms with a Germicidal UV Lamp

Ultraviolet light is the reason you get sunburned after spending too much time outdoors. The short wavelength that keeps UV light invisible to our eyes also increases its energy. This energy can break down the molecular bonds of genetic material, including that of microorganisms like mildew and bacteria. The sudden change can completely destroy microbes or simply prevent them from reproducing, but the benefits are largely similar.

It’s best to install UV lights straight into your HVAC system. As air passes through during a heating or cooling cycle, airborne microbes come in contact with the UV light while they move past. You can preserve comfortable temperatures while also improving air quality. And since the germicidal lamp is restricted to the air ducts, you won’t need to worry about being affected by the UV rays.

A UV light placed inside the ductwork is considered an air sanitizing light, and is ideal for microbes already airborne. An air sanitizing light can be integrated with the HVAC system’s blower motor, where the light only comes on during an active heating or cooling cycle.

There are also lights made for specific HVAC hardware like an air conditioner’s condenser coils. Some new coil sanitizing lights will prevent mold and mildew from utilizing the coils’ moisture.
